Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much from his failures as from his successes.
Design Project
Being sick, this was the first day of class I have missed at UWS. I looked at the materials online to see what I missed, and it seems that the lesson was concerned with creating a design-based project for a class of students. The topic for the design is aligned with the "big idea" identified earlier on in the course: the Internet in my case.
Memory Game
As part of this week's tutorial, we worked on producing a memory game, where students had a deck of cards featuring sets of cards to do with a single topic. The cards were grouped into threes, with each group containing a term, definition and picture. The idea was to produce the cards in MS Word and print them off.
Qualities of a Teacher
Today in computing we discussed the qualities that make a good teacher, using the perspective we gained during Focus Week to guide us. Working in groups of 4, we contributed our ideas to a discussion group, from which Alan drew up a combined list. I was interested to see what I would come up with on my own following this exercise...and it looks like this:
- Affable
Unit Planning Revisited
In today's class we took another look at our project plans, and used a new task to further hone our task and lesson planning faculties.
I worked on Task 1, Internet History. See the attachment for more information.
Lesson Plans Revisited
Attached are the two lesson plans I created as part of Computing 1X's Assignment 1. Looking back at this work after a short break, I can see ways to improve it. What jumps out most is the fact that the values that I intended on teaching are no explicitly stated in the plans, even though I thought they were!
Lesson Plan
Today I started written work on my first lesson plan for IST. I have been mulling over ideas for a few days, and was starting to think that I had it all straight and that the planning template we need to use would prove to be overkill.
Project Plan
Today's class focused on taking our project from last week, and breaking it down into a series of tasks, each ending in the delivery of a student artefact of some kind. Usually such deliverables can fit into one of three categories: product, presentation or performance. Teachers use these artefacts as evidence to assess student learning.
Unit Planning
Today we looked at backwards design, as applied to creating a working curriculum from the NSW syllabus for IST. Rather than creating lessons plans as a first step, we stood back and asked ourselves where are the general aims of the syllabus.
3 Wise Men
Part of this week's tutorial was to do some research on Bloom, de Bono and Gardner: three influential meta-thinkers who have had huge impacts on the field of education.
