Ross's Portfolio

It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry.

Drupal IPT Project

Having completed my first practicum I thought it would be useful to post the major artifact that came out of it: the unit of work plan for the project I ran with my two HSC classes. This complete document details a proejct whereby students in the HSC IPT Preliminary course work in teams to redevelop their school website using the Drupal Content Management System (CMS).

Reflections on Prac 1

Professional Experience 1 (aka prac) has come and gone. In fact, two weeks have passed since I finished at North Sydney Boys. On Friday I had the pleasure of going back in to school to see my students present their final project deliverables, and I was extremely pleased with the progess they have made over the past 6 weeks.

Another Friday

Another Friday rolls around. This one marks the end of the first week of block practicum: another three weeks to go. I definiely prefer being in school teaching (and learning) to being at university learning about teaching.

Design Project

Being sick, this was the first day of class I have missed at UWS. I looked at the materials online to see what I missed, and it seems that the lesson was concerned with creating a design-based project for a class of students. The topic for the design is aligned with the "big idea" identified earlier on in the course: the Internet in my case.

Memory Game

As part of this week's tutorial, we worked on producing a memory game, where students had a deck of cards featuring sets of cards to do with a single topic. The cards were grouped into threes, with each group containing a term, definition and picture. The idea was to produce the cards in MS Word and print them off.

Qualities of a Teacher

Our work in Computing 1X this week touched upon what it means to be a good teacher. I felt the relevance to many of the discussions that have taken place in Pedagogies. For more, see Qualities of a Teacher.

Qualities of a Teacher

Today in computing we discussed the qualities that make a good teacher, using the perspective we gained during Focus Week to guide us. Working in groups of 4, we contributed our ideas to a discussion group, from which Alan drew up a combined list. I was interested to see what I would come up with on my own following this exercise...and it looks like this:
